Day 1: Departure from US
(September 11)

This evening we embark on our journey to England to discover and experience the Anglican roots of our Episcopal faith. Get some sleep on the plane … because our pilgrimage begins as soon as we land in London.

Day 2: London & Canterbury (September 12)

  • Arrive London Heathrow Airport. Meet guide and coach driver for transfer to Kent.

  • Transfer to London city center. Subject to flight arrival time and traffic, hopefully watch the Changing of the Guard.

  • Lunch

  • Southwark Cathedral.  Standing at the oldest crossing-point of the River Thames at what was for many centuries the only entrance to the City of London, situated across the river. A verbal tradition passed on to the Elizabethan historian John Stow suggests that the first Christian establishment as a community of nuns in the 7th century. It is one of the starting points of the Pilgrims Way – and the starting point for our Anglican Heritage pilgrimage.

  • London Eye.  Enjoy panoramic views of the city as you slowly rotate around the world’s largest cantilevered observation wheel.

  • Transfer to Canterbury

  • Dinner at the hotel

Day 3: Canterbury
(September 13)

  • St. Martin’s Church.  St. Martin’s is the oldest church in continuous use in the English-speaking world. The oldest part of the church was built during the Roman occupation of Britain. This church, along with St Augustine’s Abbey are key sites representing the earliest Christian foundations in England.

  • St Augustine’s Abbey.  Founded in 598 CE by St Augustine himself, this once-great abbey proclaims the rebirth of Christianity in southern England. Augustine, a missionary from Rome, baptized the pagan King Ethelbert of Kent, the most powerful Anglo-Saxon monarch and the first to convert to Christianity. To mark his conversion, Ethelbert gave Augustine land to build this very first monastery in Anglo-Saxon England.

  • Free time for lunch.

  • Canterbury Cathedral.  With architectural triumphs, spectacular stained glass windows, and magnificent collections – discover all that the Cathedral and its grounds has to offer. Remain in the Cathedral to close out your visit by attending Evensong.

  • Dinner and evening at leisure.

Day 4: Canterbury & Winchester
(September 14)

  • Option to attend a morning service at Canterbury Cathedral.  Dependent on Cathedral schedule.

  • Transfer to Winchester

  • Free time for lunch

  • Winchester Cathedral.  One of England’s most historic buildings, this cathedral boasts centuries of English heritage, magnificent architecture, priceless treasures and works of art. Once the seat of Anglo-Saxon and Norman royal power, this site has played host to Kings and Queens including William the Conqueror, Mary Tudor and Prince Philip of Spain. The shrine of St Swithin, within the cathedral, is another starting point for the Pilgrims Way walk. Depending on the cathedral schedule, stay for Evensong.

  • Dinner at hotel

Day 5: Salisbury
(September 15)

  • Stonehenge.  Experience the unforgettable atmosphere of the Great Stone Circle  as you walk among the Neolithic houses.

  • Free time for lunch

  • Salisbury Cathedral.  Enjoy the serenity and splendor of this stunning cathedral, gaze up at Britain’s tallest spire, explore Britain’s largest Cathedral Close and Cloisters, see the world’s oldest mechanical clock, and the best-preserved original 1215 Magna Carta – all in one beautiful place.

  • Dinner and evening at leisure

Day 6: Oxford
(September 16)

  • Transfer to Oxford

  • Walking tour of Oxford.  A key city in the Anglican Heritage Trail, which includes sites such as the Bodleian Library, Radcliffe Square, St Mary the Virgin Church, and the Martyr’s Memorial – a prominent 19th-century monument. It is a key piece of our Anglican heritage, built to commemorate three Protestant bishops – Thomas Cranmer, Nicholas Ridley, Hugh Latimer – who were burned at the stake nearby in 1555-1556 during the Marian persecutions.

  • Free time or lunch

  • Christ Church College and Cathedral.  The site has been a place of worship for more than a thousand years. A monastery was founded here in the eighth century by St Frideswide. It has been featured in several films and TV series, notably the Harry Potter films.

  • Afternoon High Tea

  • Transfer to London

  • Dinner at Hotel

Day 7: London
(September 17)

  • Panoramic City Tour of London.  Includes Oxford and Regent Streets, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, London’s Theatre District. See The Grand Mall and Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and Houses of Parliament.

  • Tower of London.  Explore London’s iconic castle and World Heritage Site. Get up close to the Crown Jewels, meet the legendary Yeoman Warders (Beefeaters) and ravens, and see the Tower like never before.

    Free time for lunch

    Westminster Abbey.  The Abbey has been the center of Anglican royal worship since 1066, shaping the lives of kings, queens, statesmen, soldiers, poets, priests, heroes, and even a few villains. Stay for Evensong.

    Dinner and evening at leisure

Day 8: London
(September 18)

  • Morning at Leisure

  • St Paul’s Cathedral.  Explore the magnificent interior of St Paul’s Cathedral and uncover a fascinating history that dates back centuries. Experience breathtaking panoramic views from its iconic domes that sits 111 metres (364 feet) above the city. Remain in the cathedral for Evensong.

  • Farewell Dinner at the hotel

Day 9: Return home
(September 19)

  • Transfer to London Heathrow for return flight to Philadelphia, filled with memories of a wonderful pilgrimage to these iconic sites.

  • Spaces reserved on ‘first received, first reserved’ basis. With only 25 spaces available for the pilgrimage, it is advisable to submit your deposit as early as possible.

  • At the present time, Spirited Pilgrimages is unable to process credit card payments. We are working to accommodate credit card payments in the near future. In the meantime, please submit deposit payments by check, made payable to ‘Spirited Pilgrimages’.

AIR TERMS & CONDITIONS:

  • In order to keep the price affordable, Spirited Pilgrimages utilizes group airline ticket pricing. Group air tickets are priced in economy. Seat upgrades may be requested but cannot be guaranteed. Additional cost will be charged to traveler.

  • Spirited Pilgrimages does not have the ability to guarantee assigned seating when making group air arrangements. Air carriers are responsible for seat assignments, and most group air contracts assign seats at the airport check-in on day of departure.

  • Mileage credit for individuals on group air contracts is not guaranteed and is subject to the rules of each airline under contract.

  • Passengers wishing to cancel or change their air reservation may be subject to cancellation penalties.

  • Air schedules may be subject to change at the discretion of the airline.
